Bring back the Pony Express

Fri, 01/09/2015 - 6:00pm

Dear Editor:

I subscribed to the Boothbay Register for a period of more than 40 years. In the summer it is delivered to our home on Barters Island, and the rest of the year to where ever we are as a result of having to make a living. Now, that I am retired, it is being mailed to Sarasota, Florida.

Recently the delivery times have become irregular and excessively long. Starting on Oct. 8, 2014, I have kept an accurate log of the papers transit time by the USPS from Boothbay to Sarasota, Florida. The average delivery time was 14.5 days. Compare this to the Pony Express, which in 1860 delivered mail from St. Joseph, Missouri to Sacramento, California over a distance of 1900 miles in 9 days.

"United States Postal Service, did you consider the acquisition of a few ponies?”
