Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club: A busy two weeks ahead

Thu, 07/30/2015 - 9:45am

Every day is packed with activities and opportunities as the summer of 2015 marches on. Last week featured among other things the Classic Boat race which was won by Michael Gaffney in Sunfish. Michael is a regular racer at BHYC events and is entered in the Regatta this coming weekend. Bob Scribner our Rear Commodore finished second in Panache and Patty Berger took third honors in her BHOD, Wildfire.

Last Saturday was one of the longer board meetings on record with a myriad of items brought to the board for considerations and discussion. More information will be forthcoming shortly on possible plans and costs and various methods of financing of the McKown house replacement now tentatively scheduled for the fall of 2016.

Work will commence on Monday, Aug. 3, on a revitalization of the casino thanks to a committee chaired by Gardiner Rapelye and with the support of the board and the finance committee. A number of minor but possibly important changes to the bylaws were vetted and accepted or rejected for presentation to the members at the annual meeting in August. And finally the financial reports and prognosis for operations in the 2015 season are strong and positive.

It did come out at the meeting that there are several nice maple 6’ dinner tables being sold as surplus and Jim Matel is the contact person. Also the Junior program is selling two older Opti’s, which have been repaired and restored but their usefulness to the program has expired. Contact Jim or PC Andy Holmes for word on these. One of the Opti’s can be seen leaning up on the corner of the Junior sailing center building (McKown house) and the tables are presently in the casino.

Friday night’s drawing started and ended quickly with a bang. The first name drawn was Linda Burley; she was about two feet from the commodore when her name was read and she gracefully accepted the $350 dining room credit award. This week we start again at $300.

We have snacked well at the recent Thursday night cocktails. On the 16th, the mahjong gang led by Sara Seepe were the providers and on the 23rd, the book club chaired by Mary Ellen Hare did the honors. This week we will be treated by the folks from Barters Island chaired by Anne Hughes. By the way, PC Louise is looking for folks to provide goodies at the Aug. 11 party. Please call or email her that your group will do it. How about the Bank of Boston alumni who have been wonderful in the past?

This coming weekend is a busy one as it features our 41st annual BHYC Regatta. Sailboats from all over the Maine Coast will descend upon our harbor for a two day major event on the GMORA racing circuit. This year registrations point to the probability that we will once again be the largest regatta held on the coast of Maine. Charles Barclay, director of the Junior sailing program and director of sailing at Maine Maritime Academy, will serve at the Principal Race Officer. Races begin around 11 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday.

The Regatta is not only for the racers as all BHYC members are invited and encouraged to participate in the Saturday Night Regatta Dixieland Lobster Fest. The Pete Collins Dixieland Band will be entertaining and both lobster and chicken will be available to enjoy. Reservations as usual, are made by calling the front desk. ($35 lobster and $25 chicken; tax and tip included).

Sunday night there is a barbecue cookout at 5 p.m. During this event, awards for the regatta will be presented. Club members and their families are welcome to attend and enjoy.

Last Monday night was the annual pizza/bingo night for the Junior program, chaired by Ilona and Greg Dungan. Over 100 folks attended and enthusiastically participated.

Tonight (Thursday) is the Pre-Cruise Dinner when Fleet Captain Greg Shea will review all of the minute details of the Down East cruise which leaves on Saturday and returns on the 15th. If you are leaving your mooring at BHYC during the cruise, please let the stewards know as we will be grateful to have them available for the Regatta weekend people.

Regatta is not the only thing happening on Saturday as the annual Lyman Rendezvous is scheduled for lunch time that day. Chair Mary Linda Rapelye is expecting between seven and nine classic Lymans for that event.

Looking ahead, on Aug. 8, the clubhouse will be closed for both lunch and dinner and the bar closed as well due to a wedding. But on Aug. 9, we’ll be back in full use as we celebrate the Commodore’s Cup Race Day and a visit by the Boston Yacht Club.
