Boothbay gets big win over Spruce Mountain
The Boothbay Region Seahawks are on a roll and Friday’s Homecoming win over the visiting Spruce Mountain Phoenix might have been the team's biggest win of the season so far.
The Seahawks got two second half goals, an unassisted third quarter goal by Sophia Gatnar at 2:46, and a fourth quarter goal by Zuri Smith, off an assist from Olivia Hardwick, at 4:07, and went on to win 2-0.
Boothbay improved to 9-1-1 and is in second place in Class C South, close behind top-ranked Lisbon, who the Seahawks tied 0-0 in double overtime in late September.
It looked like Spruce Mountain, now 7-3 and in fourth place in Class C South, wanted to upset the Seahawks as they put pressure on the defense in the first quarter, gaining five penalty corners. Boothbay’s defense stood up to the challenge and stopped each corner and Seahawk goalie Jess Rayburn had three saves.
From the second quarter on, the Seahawks foiled any type of offensive attack by the Phoenix, dominating play on both ends of the pitch.
Both teams ended up with 10 penalty corners. Boothbay had seven shots on goal while Spruce Mountain had four.
The Seahawks will be hosting the winless (0-10) Telstar Rebels on Monday, Oct. 6 at 3:30 p.m. Boothbay defeated the Rebels 10-0 in Bethel on Sept. 8.
