The Boothbay Region High School girls varsity basketball team stepped up its defense in the second half and went on to overtake the visiting Telstar Rebels, 48-41, at Porter Memorial Gymnasium Thursday night, Jan. 18.

Trailing much of the first half and getting into foul trouble, Seahawk coach Bruce Orne’s team came together to hold Telstar to just 15 second-half points with full-court pressure and timely rebounding on both ends of the court.

The Seahawks’ offense got better in the final two quarters as well. After not connecting on their 3-pointers in the first half, Boothbay made four – two each by Magen Burge and Sophie White. Boothbay outscored the Rebels, 17-8, in the final quarter to seal the victory.

Maddie Orchard led the Seahawks in scoring with 14 points and Anna Gosselin scored in every quarter to add 10 points.

Other Seahawks contributing to Boothbay’s fourth win of the season were Bella Orr with seven, Burge and White with six each, and Tatum French with five.

Morgan Zetts led Telstar with 15 points, followed by Sarah Chase with 10 and Karen Marshall with eight. The loss dropped the Class D South Rebels to 5-5 on the season.

Now 4-7, the Seahawks travel to Dirigo on Saturday, Jan. 20 for a 2 p.m. game against the 2-7 Cougars. Boothbay is currently in 13th place in the Heal point standings with the top 12 teams earning a post-season berth.
