Voter participation was lower than last year’s during Boothbay’s referendum-style town meeting on May 4.

Only 209 of the town’s 2,533 registered voters cast ballots, which was less than last year’s 318, and 564 who cast ballots in 2013. This was the first time Boothbay used a referendum format.

Town Clerk Bonnie Lewis said the low turnout was expected.

“It wasn’t because of the referendum-style election,” she said. “It was more to do with there being no opposition in the municipal races and nothing really controversial on this year’s ballot.”

Voters approved all 25 articles, reelected all six municipal officials seeking reelection, and approved the $1,828,174 municipal budget.

The fiscal year 2015-16 budget represents a 1.64 increase. Voters also appropriated $120,200 from unassigned fund balance to exercise its option to purchase the nearby post office property. The town has held the right-of-first refusal to purchase the half acre parcel owned by Paul Weaver of Massachusetts since 2011. The property is located at 16 Corey Lane.

Weaver notified Boothbay officials last year he wanted to sell the property, which is the current location of the local post office.

Voters approved the appropriation,144-61.

Selectmen Dale Harmon and Steven Lewis were reelected to three year terms. Harmon received 152 votes and Lewis received 154. Thirteen write-ins were cast in the selectmen’s race.

Kenneth Marston was reelected as a Boothbay Region Water District Trustee. He received 184 votes with one write-in ballot cast. John C. Bertolet won reelection to the Boothbay-Boothbay Harbor Community School District Committee. He received 175 votes with three write-ins cast.

Kim Pinkham won reelection to the cemetery district with 179 votes with no write-ins cast. And Chris Buchanan won reelection as a CSD trustee as a write-in candidate with 45 votes.

All offices are for three-year terms.
