On June 18, a very special graduate of Edgecomb Eddy School’s sixth grade class, Ava Carmolli, was awarded the Sara Leone Outstanding Citizenship Award. Ava was selected by the school’s faculty and staff because of her quiet leadership and integrity, her desire to do the right things, or challenge those that appear wrong, and for being a great role model for others. Ava expressed the pride and honor she felt when chosen for this award, and hopes to share her citizenship skills at Great Salt Bay Community School, where she will be attending seventh grade next year.

The Sara Leone Outstanding Citizenship Award is given annually to honor the memory of Sara, who attended Edgecomb Eddy School until she graduated in 2002. Sara stood out as a child with enthusiasm for learning, a love of the outdoors and a zest for life — a wonderful blend of passion and compassion. Ava’s name has been added to the commemorative plaque that hangs at the Edgecomb Eddy School along with past recipients of Sara’s Award.

Sara's parents founded an organization called Teens To Trails to celebrate Sara's love of the outdoors and help other young people have access to similar experiences. Teens To Trails (also called "T3" for short) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization engaging teens in the Maine outdoors through their promotion of and support for high school Outing Club programs. T3’s goal is to establish an Outing Club in every Maine high school community so that every teen has access to amazing outdoor experiences and the healthy life-long lifestyles that come with a love of the outdoors.
