Boothbay Harbor Rotary Club
Last week we were right here on the Boothbay peninsula, while at the same time traveling back into the mid-1800s with historian Jon Dunsford. He has been studying New England maritime history and especially the early history of boats and boat building on the Boothbay peninsula. In the early 19th century almost 200 ships, schooners, barks, etc were built here before the economic crash of 1857 which was partially caused by overuse of resources from building so many boats so intensely. Jon introduced us to the big names in boat building during that time. Not surprisingly Hodgdon was one of them. Maps, drawings and rare photos made his story come alive. This was Part 1 of the story, Jon says. He has a busy summer planned, but will be back in the fall with Part 2. We're looking forward to it.
This week our own Patty Seybold will talk to us about maintaining a healthy brain as we age. Certainly a topic we’re all looking for pointers on. She is a volunteer with the Boothbay Region Health Center’s Brain Health program. She will share some findings in the latest brain health research, discuss possible causes of cognitive decline, and share the program’s lifestyle guidelines. If you want to preserve the clarity of your mind as you age don't miss it.
The following week is the Rotary Interact Club Spaghetti Dinner. Enjoy delicious spaghetti with a choice of sauces at the clubhouse with your friends and neighbors. Or, swing by and pick up a take home order. All delicious and all to benefit the projects and work of the Boothbay Region High School Interact Club. Who, might I say, we are very proud of.
The big, gray Rotary Barn clean out was this past Saturday. A big thank you to all the Rotarian volunteers and the folks at Inn Along the Way in Damariscotta for their strong backs, trucks, trailers and good humor. We got a lot done. The place looks empty. (Just what we wanted). Now, out with the old is accomplished. Pick ups will be starting soon, so we can finish by saying … in with the new. All getting ready for our early April opening day.
We meet every Thursday night at 6 for dinner, friendship and an interesting program. We meet in our clubhouse, 66 Montgomery Road, Boothbay Harbor. Everyone is welcome to join us. You'll be glad you did.
