Halloween scary readings and community potluck

October 30 at the Opera House at Boothbay Harbor

With the first snowflakes already appearing, the holiday season is not far off. On Friday, Oct. 30, the Opera House will host its first seasonal potluck of the year, followed by “scary readings” presented by costumed actors on stage. Those attending are invited to wear Halloween attire, or come as themselves.

“Throughout the year the opera house is filled with audience members from near and far, but it is during our holiday community potlucks that the opera house shines more brilliantly than any other time,” said Opera House Director Cathy Sherrill.

“Coming together means enjoying each others company, and maybe a great salad made by a neighbor, a hot bowl of chili prepared by your kid’s teacher, a dessert made by your dentist. The warmth inside the Opera House on these potluck nights is palpable, and it is a great way for all of us to celebrate this place, this community,” mused Sherrill.

Everyone is asked to bring a generous salad, main, side or dessert and the necessary utensil(s) for serving it. Please do not bring bread. Those attending are also asked to bring along personal utensils and a plate and a bowl, since some of the potluck offerings have included soup or chili in past years.

As there are only a few available electrical outlets in the main performance hall, community members are asked to bring their main dishes or side dishes hot versus planning to warm them up at the opera house.

The over-the-top decorations created by Technical Director Kevin Kiley set the perfect mood for the night. Actor and Box Office Manager Millie Santiago will, again, perform one of the readings alongside a talented pool of actors, young and old.

The opera house doors will creak open at 5:30 p.m, with the hope that potluck dishes arrive between 5:30-6 p.m., in time for all (and no doubt a spirit or two ... who said that?) to sit down for the 6 p.m. dinner.

The scary readings will begin at approximately 7 p.m.

The opera house bar on the main floor will have beer and wine available for those who may want to settle their nerves before the scary stories begin.

This is a free community event, no tickets or reservations are required, just come in your Halloween best, and bring along a great dish to share.
