Ocean Point Column: Season-ending notices
I often find myself pondering over the question what happened to summer? It certainly seemed to sail by and unfortunately it means our activities have come to an end for the season.
Although activities have ceased here at the Point I like to remind myself that there are several more weeks of summer to be enjoyed and September can be quite lovely.
Maureen Driscoll organized the last beach picnic of the season last Monday that was well attended and enjoyed by all.
The Annual Meeting of the OPCT was held on Saturday morning with a large crowd in attendance. The following slate of officers was recommended and voted on by the community: President, Paul Taylor; Vice President, Kelly Robbins; Treasurer, Barb Klein; Secretary, Maryellen Bertrand and new Board Members David Houston, Mary Ripley and Dana Demers.
Many thanks to our co AD’s Abby and Tim Mahoney for all of their efforts in making activities run very smoothly this summer and to Isabel Harkins as well. Sadly, Isabel will not be returning next summer, as she will be in Chicago. We all wish you much success Isabel.
The Casino will be open until Labor Day from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. as will the tennis and pickleball courts. Beginning Sept. 4 the courts will be locked and you must reserve your court time on My Courts in order to play. Guest fees can be paid online.
The Rev. Dr. Mary Kelly Murphy Mason, Community Minister for Spiritual Director, Arlington Street Church, Unitarian Universalist, Boston, Massachusetts will conduct the final Sunday Service at the Wilson Chapel on Sunday, Aug. 27 beginning at 9 a.m.; all are welcome to attend.
All of Ocean Point is so saddened to hear of the sudden passing of Brennan Houston last week. Brennan was the son of David and Terri, brother of sister Allie and the grandson of Bob and Ruby Houston. Brennan and his family vacationed each summer on Grimes Avenue with Bob and Ruby. My fondest recollection of Brennan was his participation in our 4th of July Horribles Parade and activities with his family. Brennan was an extremely outgoing, kind, caring, and bright individual with a winning smile. He attended Mississippi State University as a premed student with future plans to attend Medical School. He had many Ocean Point friends that he enjoyed being with, especially at Grimes Cove. Brennan was loved by so many and will surely be missed by all.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Houston Family. Donations may be made in his memory to the Blair E Batson Children’s of Mississippi Hospital at www.umc.edu/Office_of_Development/Ways-to-Give/Funds/Fund-Childrens_Hospital.html.
It was a beautiful Ocean Point day for the recent wedding of Kerrin Rowley and Sean Lynch. As many witnessed their reception was held on the Fuller property and by the sounds of the band it was a truly wonderful and celebratory occasion. Kendall is the daughter of Kerrin and Stod Rowley and granddaughter of Ted and Mary Fuller. Congratulations and best wishes to the happy couple.
Many of our young residents have left for school or school sports and the Point has quieted down considerably, all the best to them in the new school year.
Please remember the Food Pantry if you are preparing to leave.
Have a great week!
