It was exciting to read the review of “Searching For Systems in the Ever Changing Sea: A History of Bigelow Labs.”

It stands as an example of leadership, collaboration, and support for those who “think outside the box” - two young scientists who had a vision that would allow scientists to design their own studies.

Look how the support from the commissioner of marine resources found the space in the department and collaborated with this young team has led to our deeper understanding of the oceans.

The ripple effect, the Bigelow campus in East Boothbay now gives opportunities for local high school students for work study, college students intern with the international scientist,  and to the public through Cafe Scientifique is invited to presentations in the summer. Local elementary students are presenting their work in STEM project to scientists who research the world’s oceans and arctic regions.

Young people in the STEM program should read this book. It is well written and easy for the lay person. It gives a window into ongoing research along with a history and mission of an international laboratory that grew from leadership, support, and collaboration among a few scientists “thinking outside the box,” something sorely needed in all fields as we tackle modern life.
