The song sung by Jimmy Durante, “What a Wonderful World,” is lilting through my mind as I gaze up to the Wedgwood skies of now mid-February. There is a distinct fresh smell in the air as if it has been ionized. The sun is crisp and the temperature is nearly tropical. It is 23 degrees.

Valentine’s Day fast approaches with its own “heads up.”

As was incorrectly reported in last week’s column, Sarah Strousss will not be hosting the Thursday Night Cocktails on this Thursday, the 14th. She will be the host for next Thursday’s, the 21st, event. It will be from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

Our search for our new club manager presses on. We continue to be optimistic that we will have the position filled well before the season begins.

The Junior Sailing and Tennis Program is hard at work under the strong guidance of Charlie Cochrane. It’s hard to believe that the high school sailing will begin under the direction of Chris Liberti in less than a month. Those strong-hearted teenage mariners will don their dry suits and launch their boats in March. They will use the new Junior program dock and float. This was completed only days before BHYC hosted the Junior Olympics last summer. Water temperatures will be lethal. The Sailing and Education Center is well outfitted with a shower should someone end up in the water. Apparently hypothermia has a wicked onset where mere minutes can make the difference.

I saw a hilarious sign the other day. It was the picture of a graceful palm and its shadow stretching over a beautiful beach. The caption was, “The palm saw its shadow … six more weeks of paradise.”

It’s all in the way you look at things that matters.
