Tapestries, monoprints and whimsy are the theme of the new exhibition by Priscilla May Alden at Gold/Smith Gallery. Priscilla starts each piece with sketches and a palette of yarn scattered around her. She designs as she weaves and every thing she’s done before evolves into what comes next. It all unfolds as she weaves and if her materials were music, she weaves a symphony! 

She began with pattern weaving thirty years ago and has matured , studied and experimented until her most recent pieces which are tapestries of her life experiences.
Rhythm, harmony and human relationships, a strong connection to the spirit life and memories spoken, passed down from generation to generation are the elements that make her pieces so memorable.

Priscilla is a weaver and constructor of rich textural wall hangings with both figurative and abstract elements. Her yarns and threads are her palette. She uses them in remarkably various ways. There are many types of straight weaving in a single piece but she also incorporates knotting, twists, wraps, etc. to achieve a collage -like effect held together with her strength of concept and her wonderful sense of color. Her pieces communicate a joy that comes from her obvious love of the materials she works with. The same can be said of her mono-prints.  The element of surprise is an inspiration and gives them a special freedom and spontaneity.

Priscilla May Alden’s exhibit runs from July 26 to Aug. 21. There will be an opening reception for Priscilla at Gold/Smith Gallery, Saturday July 28 from 4-7 p.m. Everyone is invited to come meet this talented artist and enjoy the show, and of course, refreshments.

The gallery is located at 8 McKown Street, Boothbay Harbor (the pale turquoise building across from the side of the Boothbay Memorial Library). The gallery is open Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays noon to 5 p.m.
