Cy and Margaret, Elaine and Roger, Dewey, Clifton and Emma ... authentic Midcoast character names, from an authentic Midcoast original work on stage at Heartwood, June 29 through July 7. Following numerous actor workshops, rewrites and a May preview performance, the cast of seven is working to complete and polish this poignant piece, based on a collection of 15 short stories by Heartwood's Artistic Director Griff Braley.

Set in Midcoast Maine during the late 1980s to early 2000s, “Down Along the Cove” explores the challenges and joys of a small community facing hard memories, change, love, loss and redemption. The characters are easily recognizable as “folks from around here.” As one preview audience member expressed it, “‘Maine’ characters stood out, people with expressions, attitudes, in addition to accents, that were just so true and recognizable. Not caricatured, just very true.”

Laced with wry humor and every day moments to savor, “Down Along the Cove” is described by another pleased previewer as having “... an intimate credibility of this Maine community, with many passages of beautiful, descriptive, almost poetic prose.”

Script, set and costumes speak Midcoast Maine. Cast and crew are running double rehearsals to soften the edges, fill in the spaces (and leave some ...) and dig deeply into the lives of these characters and their community.

The vignette driven piece winds its way through the relationships of family, friends and neighbors navigating daily events, old wounds and changing times and will speak to audience both “from here” and “from away.”

Five performances are scheduled in the Poe Theater at Lincoln Academy, with a 3 p.m. matinee on Sunday, July 1 and four 7:30 evening performances on June 29 and 30, July 6 and 7. Reservations strongly suggested by emailing info@heartwoodtheater.org or phoning 563-1373. Student tickets are $5, subsidized by donations from First Advisors and Colby & Gale; adult tickets are $20.

“Down Along the Cove” received special support from the Maine Community Foundation and is sponsored by First Advisors, J&H Landscaping and Norumbega Oyster, Inc. Heartwood's annual programming would not be possible, without the support of Season Sponsor, Bath Savings Institution and Mainstage Sponsor, Granite Hill Estates.
