YMCAs address arthritis management and falls prevention

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately one in four U.S. adults has arthritis. Joint pain and lack of physical activity are common among adults with arthritis and this is linked to poor mental and physical health outcomes. Evidence-based, self-management programs with low-impact, group exercise are designed to safely increase physical activity in those with arthritis.

In partnership with LincolnHealth, Central Lincoln County (CLC) Boothbay Region (BR) YMCAs offer Enhance® Fitness, an evidence-based group exercise program developed by Sound Generations, Inc. that uses simple, easy-to-learn movements that motivate older adults to stay active throughout their lives. The CDC has recommended this program as an effective arthritis management intervention. While this program is geared toward supporting those who struggle with arthritis, the program may also be suitable for any older adult to gain strength, build cardiovascular endurance, and to prevent falls.

The program is facilitated by certified Instructors with training in group exercise, arthritis conditions, and the Enhance®Fitness program curriculum and is conducted in a supportive group setting. In a typical class, participants will experience a warm up, aerobic exercise, strength training, balance work, and a cool down. You do not need to be a YMCA member to participate in this program, as this is a mission-based program focused on community healthy living and social responsibility. The CLC YMCA’s Annual Fund helps to offset the cost of all YMCA Evidence-Based Health Intervention programs.
