YMCA starts new fitness program

Sat, 09/26/2020 - 8:30am

The Boothbay Region YMCA’s new class, Enhance®Fitness, is an evidence-based program geared toward older adults who would enjoy the low-impact activities that help them stay fit. Individuals living with a chronic illness need not worry as they will be working with a certified instructor who will never make or suggest they do anything that hurts. Participants have the option use a chair for extra support and either increase or decrease their ankle and wrist cuff weights at their own pace. The program is structured to last 16 weeks, meeting three times per week. Each session includes:

  • 5-minute warm-up to get the blood flowing to muscles
  • 20-minute aerobic workout or a walking workout to get participants moving
  • 5-minute cool-down
  • 20-minute strength training workout with soft ankle and wrist weights (0-20 pounds)
  • 10-minute stretching to keep the muscles flexible
  • Balance exercises throughout the class
  • A welcoming community that helps to create strong social relationships.

Past participants have noticed an increase in energy, increase in strength, and increase in their range for flexibility. Many have also reported noticing improvements in their sleep, overall happiness, and sense of independence.

To qualify for this program, participants must be older than eighteen years, willing to participate in an evidence-based health program, take a pre and post physical test, and be able to commit to the full 16 week schedule. Sign up begins Oct. 1 and classes begin Tuesday, Oct. 6 and will be each Tuesday and Thursday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. and Saturdays from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.
