We are so close

Dear Editor:

I wanted to get really excited today — I finally got to sign up for my first dose of vaccine and I think I can smell spring in the air. But then I saw the number of new cases reported  in Maine and it is trending up again. Why can’t we figure this Covid thing out?

While I agree with the governor trying to relax restrictions a little and talking about a fairly normal summer season, I am scared. People seem not be  wearing masks as much, even inside. Social distancing seems to be non-existent at bars. I feel like on this “anniversary” of when we all started to hear about Covid, we have decided to immediately celebrate it is over and completely reverse to pre-Covid days. And, guess what, it is still here!

The number of new cases is still up there. People are still dying, and while at a slower rate, the numbers are not acceptable. I would urge everyone to use their common sense and remain vigilant. Keep your mask on in crowded public places, particularly inside. Please use your hand sanitizer. Please don’t have a big indoor event with friends and family, unmasked, when not everyone has been vaccinated or is potentially at high risk. Please get vaccinated as soon as you can!

Think about what we have been through and the lockdowns and the heartache and loneliness. Think about the fact that within a matter of months, we will all be vaccinated. And then, let us take what we have learned about ourselves and our country and let’s see if we can put our learning to good use.
