On Aug. 23 at 6:15 p.m., the Southport Memorial Library will host author Dr. Chuck Radis who has written “Go By Boat and Island Medicine.” Books will be available for signing and sale. Doors open at 6 p.m.

Following graduation from Bates College in 1976 with a degree in biology, Dr. Radis committed to a career in osteopathic medicine. He received his doctor of osteopathy degree from the Kansas City University of Medicine and Bioscience. After completing his internal medicine residency, the doctor moved his family to Peaks Island off the coast of Maine and provided primary care to four year-round islands in Casco Bay. In addition to his clinic duties on Peaks and Chebeague Islands, he traveled year-round by boat to the outer islands of High and Cliff logging more than 100 yearly house calls. He also cared for his patients in the osteopathic hospital in Portland. As a doctor, always on call, he traveled by ferry, by police boat and by his boat when patients called.

 In 1991 Dr. Radis left his Peaks Island medical practice for fellowship training in clinical immunology/rheumatology at the University of Pittsburg’s Presbyterian University Hospital. He returned to Maine to practice rheumatology. For more than three decades he has lived on Peaks Island, commuting year-round on his boat Dasakamo to the mainland. His two daughters, Kate and Molly attended the Peaks Island grade school, graduating from Portland High School. Sandra Radis, Dr. Radis’ wife found work as a Peaks Island plumber and electrician assistant.

Dr. Radis’ academic appointments have included Tufts Medical School, The University of Vermont Medical School, and the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he is a clinical professor of medicine.
