The Maxwell Paul Moran is the 39th tugboat built for Moran Towing Corporation of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. There are four more under construction.
Washburn & Doughty specializes in the construction of steel and aluminum commercial vessels.
The boatbuilder has had an 18-year relationship with the Moran family, and Malcolm MacLeod, who signed the contract with the boatyard for the first tug it built, was at the launching along with his wife, Valentine, on Friday.
All of the Moran tugs are named after family members. The Maxwell Paul Moran was named for a grandchild.
Washburn & Doughty Director of Production Justin Clark said the tugboat took about a year to build. “We're excited about the launch today,” he said. “We try to be prepared as best we can.”
Lee Tregurtha, wife of Moran Towing Corporation’s Chairman & CEO Paul Tregurtha, christened the boat before it was launched.
