Thompson’s Bridge to get new work trestle

Mon, 01/13/2020 - 1:00pm

Despite the holidays, cold weather, high winds, snow and rain, work has continued apace on Thompson’s Bridge on Southport.

The bridge spans have been removed, Glenn Philbrook of Maine Department of Transportation reported. And he said structural earth excavation within the western end abutment cofferdam has been completed, as has vacuuming off and profiling the ledge. The seal placement at that abutment has also been finished.

Last week, the form work, rebar placement and concrete placement were finished at the western abutment. At the eastern abutment, the culvert has been extended and backfilling has commenced.

Philbrook reported that within the next two to three weeks, construction of the work trestle is expected to begin on the cove side. This will let work begin on removing the piers and, ultimately, construction of the one new pier.
