Third graders visit Boothbay Region Historical Society

Thu, 06/27/2019 - 8:15am

In early June, the two third grades from Boothbay Region Elementary School visited Boothbay Region Historical Society for a scavenger hunt. The students were given photographs of objects to locate and name. The students had fun and their teachers, Jean Cucci and Deb Jones, thanked BRHS “for giving our students this opportunity to be fascinated and intrigued with history.”

This visit was the culmination of a new history program developed by the Historical Society for third graders. The Society’s Outreach Manager Kathy Goldner visited their classrooms three times during the year with artifacts, stories, and craft projects illustrating the history of the region.

After the trip, the teachers shared student comments with BRHS, including these three:

When we went to the BRHS today, we did a scavenger hunt. My favorite part was the wooden box. The guy who made it was on Barters Island. He made it for his own entertainment. I thought it was super interesting to go to the Boothbay Region Historical Society. I hope I’m able to go again sometime soon. –Natalie

I like learning about the past. I liked the scavenger hunt. It was fun to find all the things. I love history! –Mahea

This twenty-four hours we went on a field trip. The weather was nice. It felt like 64 degrees F and sunny. At the destination of the bus ride, the Boothbay Region Historical Society, we saw many wondrous things. Such as prehistoric arrowheads! And — all this in just one old house! –Casey

The last of these three student comments was written in the style of a young boy’s nineteenth century diary, which was part of a BRHS classroom presentation during the year. More information on this program can be found at www.boothbayhistorical.org/education

The Boothbay Region Historical Society is located at 72 Oak Street in Boothbay Harbor, just across the street from The First National Bank parking lot.
