Thanks for wearing masks

    Dear Editor:

As one who falls into two high risk categories, I want to say thank you to those who have been willing to put others ahead of themselves by wearing face masks and maintaining a six-foot distance. In doing so you are acknowledging that we are all in this together and that you unselfishly are willing to be patient and put other’s health ahead of your own convenience and, in many cases, your economic well-being. Thank you.

For me, this is not about politics. Sadly, for many it seems to be. I am struck by those who ask, “Why do we have to restrict our behavior when there are so few cases in Maine?” While I acknowledge that we are in a relatively good place compared to our neighbors to the south, it is reasonable to conclude that we may be in this good position because we acted early and so many Maine citizens have and continue to take the crisis seriously. Yes, many of the restrictions are frustrating and inconvenient, and I am saddened for and sympathize with those who are impacted by the economic turmoil created by the pandemic. I recognize the sacrifice that many are being asked to make.

On this Memorial Day, I am reminded of the sacrifices made by so many in the past. Indeed, in times of crisis Americans have typically stepped up and willingly made sacrifices to protect the weakest among us. We have been willing to temporarily put our responsibility for one another ahead of our own needs and, yes, our rights. I can only hope that this tradition continues.
