Thanks for supporting kelp farm

Mon, 11/26/2018 - 7:30pm

    Dear Editor:

We would like to thank the citizens of the town of Southport for being understanding and open to our new kelp aquaculture farm located in the water around Southport. You have welcomed our new endeavor and taken the time to talk with us about it and gain understanding of the farm and process.

We are appreciative of the fishermen of the Sheepscot River that have been gracious and supportive in sharing their summer fishing grounds with us during the winter months when they are not utilizing the area.

The Southport selectmen, along with the Harbor Master Jim Gagnon, have been fantastic in doing their due diligence and asking important questions to determine if the farm would be good for the community. We appreciate their time and ability to look at an emerging business market as a whole and it’s potential for positive community impact.

Lastly we would like to thank the Department of Marine Resources aquaculture staff for the positive experience and help through the license and lease process.

With the support of the Southport Island community and local Sheepscot River fishermen we were able start the region’s first small scale commercial kelp farm. We are looking forward to working together now and in the future.
