Still a net gain after fine

Mon, 04/08/2019 - 4:00pm

Dear Editor:

As April 15 is fast approaching, I have had my calculator out and warmed up.

Since I do not qualify as an admissions charging 501(c) in the IRS's view, I have paid taxes.

In the court settlement last week, a paltry $18,000+ was the fine handed down for filling vernal pools and other environmental destruction.

The gross arrogance of the quotes regarding this disrespect for environmental, local laws and procedures seems to be an ongoing theme. This same outfit was found to be using Department of Environmental Protection regulated poisons in our public watershed in the not to far past.

However ... excuse me as I digress.

The paltry sum of $18,000 is made even more insulting when one considers the fact this same organization received $50,000 of Maine taxpayers’ earnings from the Tourism Bureau only last summer!

But again I digress … $50,000 … less the paltry $18,600 fine (cost of doing business?) still equals a net gain of $31,400 taxpayer dollars!
