Several historic Westport Island houses will open their doors to the public on Sunday, Sept. 16. Presented by the Westport Island History Committee and the town, the tour begins at the old Town Hall and runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., rain or shine.

Associated with families of settlers who first made Westport Island their home in the 18th century, the featured homes with original period details exhibit classic elements of Georgian, Federal and Greek Revival styles.

The tour is a wonderful opportunity to see rural New England vernacular architecture: simple, practical building reflecting local needs, available resources and community customs, and to learn about the histories of these houses revealed in their architectural detail. Today’s Westport Island families prize the pleasing shapes and subtle refinements of their homes. Care and respect for the past are also apparent in lovingly preserved surroundings, which include barns, family cemeteries, mills, and wharves.

Admission is $20 per person at the old Town Hall on the day of the tour (cash or check only). A light lunch is included and will be available at the Town Hall for the duration of the event. The Town Hall is at 1217 Main Road (Route 144), about 7 miles south of the bridge. For questions, please call the town office at 882-8477 ext. 3. All proceeds will help to preserve Westport Island’s history.
