Southport museum opening June 27

It’s never too early to mark your calendars and save some dates for summer fun.

The Friends of the Southport Historical Society want everyone to know that the Hendricks Hill Museum on Southport will be opening for the season Tuesday, June 27 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. It will be open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturday until Saturday, September 2. We’re anticipating some exciting new events this year, including talks on the exhibits by local experts -- details to follow as we get closer.

The annual meeting, always an interesting and informative evening event, will feature a fascinating program by Maine State Historian Earle Shettleworth Jr. His program will feature antique glass slides taken by E. Joseph Leighton in the first half of the 20th century, featuring Lincoln County. It will take place at the Southport Town Hall on Monday, June 19 at 7 p.m.

We’re also recruiting new volunteers to help share Southport’s history with the world. If you’re interested into delving into our past, and want to meet some delightful visitors from all over the U.S. and the world, please contact Nan Jackson at 633-2003. Don’t worry about being a novice. We’ll train you on Wednesday, June 28 and give you a booklet on all the Museum’s holdings. Your commitment would be to work only one or two 2-hour shifts during the season, and it’s really a lot of fun.
