Southport library presents Midcoast Maine author Marita Fairfield
The Southport Memorial Library will host a free author’s talk by Midcoast Maine author Marita Fairfield on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 2 p.m.
Fairfield will discuss how her novels weave the generational changes in the Wiscasset and Boothbay peninsula region into a fantastic tale designed to entertain both new and old residents of the region alike.
In “The Merman’s Child,” Jamie realizes her dream of returning home to Maine to purchase her best friend’s childhood home on Westport Island. In doing so, she’s told the family legend of the merman of Dodge Point. One fateful night, that dream becomes a nightmare and she discovers the legend is real – or at least the merman who rescues her from the shores of her new home is very real.
“The Merman’s Hope” continues the story of the merman of Dodge Point as Jamie raises her merman’s child. There are questions about the merman’s origins that neither Adam – the name the merman goes by – nor the legend put to rest. Jamie is haunted by her own past at Dodge Point and wonders how there can be hope for the future when the past is dark and hidden?
Fairfield grew up in Wiscasset and -- like many of her generation -- left to pursue college and career aspirations. She came back to Maine once she was able to telecommute from a waterfront home on Westport Island. She has remained in the area ever since and lives on Westport Island once again. As a solo parent, she told her child and anyone who cared to ask that the father was a merman and the story grew from there.
