Southport Junior Yacht Club

Tue, 07/27/2021 - 1:30pm

This week Southport Yacht Club saw a few beautiful days for being on the water.

Friday the 16th, SYC welcomed Naval Academy sailors to the yacht club after students from the morning and afternoon class climbed aboard their high performance yachts at BHYC. The Naval Academy sailors were put into turnabouts and 420s, and lucky for all of the sailors, it was a perfect day for sailing.

On Monday, 420 sailors had a race off to determine the four boats that will be sailing at the Maine State Regatta this Tuesday and Wednesday. Those boats are Charlie Apolinsky and Brian Goldsmith, Lucas Thress and Peter Bauman, Alex Goldsmith and Maggie Doyle, and Colin and Gavin Holt. Congratulations to those sailors and good luck!

Opti sailors had a total of five races over the course of two days. Rachel Phippen won with 7 points, Nate Phippen with 10 points and Parker Baker with 18 points. Avery Khetani is in the lead for turnabout races this week.

On Thursday, SYC held its first Bingo of the year. A huge thank you to Downeast Ice Cream Favtory, The Cannery, Downeast Candies, Shirts By the Bay, Ed Brown’s Wharf side Gallery, The Smiling Cow, Orne's Candy Store, Abacus, Blue Moon Cafe, Red Cup, Taka, Gimbel and Sons Country Store, The Custom House, Sweet Bay, The Hutch, A Silver Lining, McSeagull's, The Gift Barn, Baker's Way, Brisettos, Boothbay Region Art Gallery, Sherman's, Pier 1 Pizza, The Pantry, Maine and Ivy, The Village Store, Gleason Fine Art Gallery, Slicks, Palabara, Marcel's Submarine Shop, Two Salty Dogs, Mung Bean, Janson's, Gold/Smith Gallery, The Harbor Mart, and Wannawaf for your donations that contributed to our 59 amazing prizes.

A special shout out to the staff of SYC, who despite the quite rainy weather so far this summer have worked so hard to make sailing fun for morning class sailors when sailing conditions were not ideal. For example, on Monday, sailors were split into groups and engaged in activities such as drawing their dream sailboat to a scavenger hunt on Cedarbush. Sailors were even given a tour of the magical Davids Island.
