Southport Column: The vote, good thoughts for Climos and more

Tue, 05/11/2021 - 8:00am

Look for a more news elsewhere in this paper about the outcome of Friday’s vote on Southport Community Broadband installation. You will see the the vote carried with 112 persons voting at the polls and 69 persons voting absentee. Now the work begins to find a service provider. Many thanks to our Broadband committee who worked very hard with knowledgeable people to educate all of us on Southport as to the advantages, vocabulary, and procedures involved in this project, and whose work continues to carry this project to fruition.

We especially celebrate one person on that committee who worked so hard on the project, ending up at Maine Med and undergoing bypass surgery. Smith Climo, also one of our selectmen, is healing well and should be home again by the time this paper is on the newsstands. His wife, Donna, says the medical staff commended Smith for recognizing his symptoms and getting promptly to the doctor. And Donna thanks the medical staff for taking such good care of him and of her, explaining to her the many aspects of this serious surgery and the recovery process.

More thanks go to Robinson’s Wharf and Sweet Dreams bakery for providing a Mother’s Day treat for 75 Southport mothers. Southport Island Association (SIA) officers and board members worked together to package the lunches that included cards made by Southport Central School students and flowers from SIA. Word has it that Southport fathers should be prepared for a similar June event! But more to come about that. I know I enjoyed my first lobster roll of the season along with potato salad, chips, and two large lemon cookies held together with some delicious lemon filling. Thanks to all who worked to make this sweet event come together so smoothly.

I suspect you will find an obituary for Bob Marshall who died this past week after a trip to Maine Medical following a fall and a short time under hospice care at St. Andrews Village, where he had been also before the fall. We send love and hugs to his wife, Joyce, who, like so many people this past year, will have to learn to carry on without her beloved. Bob’s funeral will be Thursday, May 13, at St. Columba’s Church beginning at 11 a.m.

Also remember that a lifelong Southporter and fisherman, Donald Brewer, will be honored with a boat parade on May 16 at noon with a reception to follow at Robinson’s Wharf.

More action continues at the Island Store, this week seeing the workmen cut pass-through windows behind the check out counter, so that we can order food to eat in the expanded picnic areas. Please continue to spread the word that the store needs help and offers competitive wages and all shifts. People can apply in person or through the website: www.southportgeneralstore.com

A sign on the door at Cozy’s Dockside in Cozy Harbor says the eatery will open in June and that they also need help. You can find out more details by going to info@midcoasthospitality.com

Or you can apply at Ocean Gate Motel for a job using the info on signs posted many places around the island.

Not only do our increasing green foliage and bright flowers signal spring is here, but also floats and boats are going into the water. At Cozy Harbor the town floats are in, and other floats were secured to them, I suspect, for David’s Island. Four lobsters boats were in the water as well as two pleasure boats. At Town Landing some floats were in, and one pleasure boat was launched ready for action. These sights lead to news from our Harbor Master, Jim Gagnon. He writes: “to avoid late fees, mooring registrations are due by June 1. Mooring registration stickers must be in place by July 1 to keep moorings out of jeopardy of removal. Additionally, any person wishing to remain on the mooring wait list must submit a letter requesting to do so . That letter must be received by the harbor master by Sept. 1. As always, if anyone has any questions, they should please feel free to contact us here in the town office, (633-3318) or southportharbormaster@gmail.com
