Something to think about

Dear Editor:

I am a subscriber of the Island Institute’s Working Waterfront, published monthly. In the June issue is an article entitled, “We ain’t quaint.” I believe this quote published in the same publication was by author Louise Dickinson Rich, famous for her book, “We took to the Woods.” Rich wrote 23 books.

Her quote about the Gouldsboro peninsula should reflect what is current on the Boothbay peninsula.

Her quote in 1958 should be applied to our current doings (or undoings) on our precious waterfront:

“When the last lobsterman hauls his last trap and turns his boat over to fishing parties from the city, when his sons turn from the sea to a full-time caretaker’s job, when his wife stops knitting bait bags and opens a gifte (sic) shoppe, and when (the local) store is transformed into a gaudy supermarket, something that was America will die.”

Something to think about.
