Down East Yacht Club

Off-season gatherings end with a large turnout

April never fails to baffle us with its weather patterns; just ask the local forecasters. However, Saturday’s muddy, windy and rainy conditions were not a deterrent to the sixty-plus Down East Yacht Club (DEYC)members and quests who found their way to the lovely home of Alice and Andy Mutch in Southport.

Roadside parking nearly necessitated one-way traffic on the already narrow Plummer Road for 2 hours between 1700 and 1900 hours. A happy crowd of DEYC members filled the Mutch’s spacious and open cove-side home on this soggy evening.

Guests were afforded a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the exquisite cuisine provided by the hosts and DEYC members. A beautiful carved ham served as the center-piece for an unbelievable presentation of delicacies. Three generous tables arrayed with food for all tastes and a plentiful bar in the enclosed water view sun porch created a wonderful atmosphere for the final gathering on the off-season calendar.

Many members were recently home from winter months in warmer weather or just back from various cruises. Conversations were lively between members and prospective members as friends were able to catch up and share stories. Among the enthusiastic party goers were P/C Bob and Paula Wheeler, P/C Sandy and Karen Young , P/C Skip and Jane Williams, and Carole McCarthy, wife of deceased P/C Bob. We were happy to see new members Mike and Sara DePesa circulating among the crowd.

The DEYC calendar begins in earnest with the busy summer season upon us. The Commodore’s Lunch at the Tugboat Inn in May, followed quickly by the “Annual Launching Party” at Hodgdon Yachts’ boatyard in Southport begins the fun-filled summer schedule.

Let’s hope for sunny skies and fair winds in the local forecast.
