Royall sculpture installed at Boothbay Register

Trees make paper, so it's appropriate that Sculpture Boothbay’s new addition to the sculpture trail has been installed at the Boothbay Register/Wiscasset Newspaper office in Boothbay Harbor.

Entitled "Autumn Hills,” this Heritage granite sculpture created around 2008, is the work of Southport sculptor Bill Royall, founder of the region’s sculpture trail. The installation on Friday, Sept. 25 was accomplished by Royall,  Robbie Campbell of Campbell Marine, employee Al Morton and the company’s boom truck; and Glen Rines.

“Autumn Hills” was first exhibited at Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens. Other venues include the Meredith Sculpture Walk in Meredith, New Hampshire – the model Royall used for the Boothbay region trail.

Royall’s sculpture replaces Lise Becu’s granite sculpture “Mother,” installed in 2017, the inaugural year of the trail, a year-round outdoor art exhibition.

Having Royall’s work outside the newspaper is fitting: Some 40 years ago, he was the advertising manager. “Working at the Boothbay Register was probably my favorite job ever,” Royall said. “I so enjoyed working with Bill Harris, David McKown, Mary Brewer, Howard and Marylouise Cowan ... I’m so happy to bring something back to the paper.”
