Rev. Paul Tunkle at All Saints June 23, 30

Mon, 06/17/2019 - 7:00am

On Sunday, June 23 the Reverend Paul Tunkle will celebrate Holy Communion at the 8 a.m. service and Morning Prayer at the 10 a.m. service at All Saints on Southport Island. Both June 30 services will be Holy Communion.

Rev. Tunkle brings a wealth of diversity of experiences to his ministry. Born and raised in a secular Jewish household, he moved from New York City to Boulder, Colorado where he met his wife, Judy. They moved to Midcoast Maine in 1972 and Rev. Tunkle earned his B.S. in business administration from the University of Maine and was employed as an accountant in Rockland. At the age of 24, he was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Rockland.

Sponsored by his parish, Tunkle made the decision to train for the priesthood. He graduated from General Theological Seminary in New York City, was ordained a deacon at St. Luke’s Cathedral in Portland in June 1984, and ordained a priest in North Carolina the following year. He earned his D. Min from the School of Theology at Drew University. He has served at many parishes including St. Luke’s in Salisbury, North Carolina, Holy Trinity in South River, New Jersey, St. James in Alexandria, Louisiana and Church of the Redeemer in Baltimore, Maryland. Rev. Tunkle retired in 2014 and moved back to Maine where he and Judy live on 38 acres in Dresden, farming and managing their forestland.

The morning prayer service is celebrated the fourth Sunday of every month. This service includes psalms, canticles, hymns, scripture readings and a sermon in a less formal liturgical setting. A social hour with refreshments follows the 10 a.m. service. At 9 a.m. on Tuesdays, June 25 and July 2, Rev. Tunkle will lead a discussion group on the church porch.

All Saints-by-the-Sea is on Southport Island on All Saints Road about two miles on the left driving south on Route 238. An Episcopal Church sign is visible by the side of the road on Rt. 238. Parking is available along the road with limited handicapped spaces off All Saints Road. A golf cart will ferry persons from the handicapped lot to the church steps. You may also come to church by private boat or by the tour boat Novelty, which leaves Boothbay Harbor from Pier 8 at 9 a.m., tides permitting. Novelty picks up passengers from the church dock at 11:40 a.m. for return to Pier 8. The very beautiful and simple wood chapel is open for quiet prayer and meditation during the week.
