Well-known throughout the Episcopal Church as a writer, retreat leader, spiritual advisor and teacher, the Rev. Martin Smith will lead services at All Saints by-the-Sea for the next three weeks. Holy Communion will be celebrated at 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. all three weeks except for July 25 at 10:30 a.m. when a service of Morning Prayer will be offered. The organist for the services is Henry Lowe, retired music director of the Church of the Redeemer in Baltimore, Maryland. Mr. Lowe has a distinguished career as a church musician and has performed recitals worldwide including in England, Holland, Germany and France.

Born in England, Rev. Smith received his BA and MA at Oxford University and after ordination, served several parishes as well as the Society of St. John the Evangelist, the oldest religious order for men in the Anglican Communion. He transferred to the American branch of the Society in 1979. Rev. Smith retired from St. Columba’s Church in Washington, D.C. in 2012. Since then, he is in demand as a teacher and workshop leader where his engaging style and vast knowledge have enriched countless spiritual seekers. He has also authored numerous books on contemporary spirituality. He recently completed a ten-month appointment at the parish of All Souls in Washington DC, serving them through the difficult pandemic period.

As Rev. Smith returns once again to his beloved community of All Saints by-the-Sea, his sense of homecoming to Maine, and the wonderful Boothbay region, grows ever stronger. It was his particular delight and privilege to serve as chaplain at the ordination of his dear friend, Bishop Thomas Brown and Rev. Smith has a keen interest in supporting Bishop Brown’s leadership and in the life and mission of the diocese of Maine.

All Saints by-the-Sea is on Southport Island on All Saints Road about two miles on the left driving south on Route 238. An Episcopal Church sign marks the side of the road. Parking is available along Route 238 with a limited number of handicapped spaces off of All Saints Road. A golf cart will ferry persons from the handicapped spaces to the church steps. You may also come to church by private boat and use the chapel dock. The simple, wooden chapel is open during the week for private prayer and meditation.
