Calling all "person-powered" watercraft. The 27th annual Rowgatta, which encompasses 9 nautical miles, is on Saturday, Aug. 8, at the Knickercane Landing on Barters Island Road, Boothbay.
The event benefits the YMCA’s Aquatics programs including the free second grade learn to swim program where all 2nd grade students on the peninsula learn to swim at the Y for free in partnership with our local elementary schools.
The Y has taken into consideration COVID-19 into the planning of this event. As an outdoor, on the water paddle, the Rowgatta offers a safe and healthy group activity. The Y will ensure careful social distancing and appropriate mask use during the registration and launch.
Registration and information is available at the Y Membership Desk and on the website at www.boothbayregionymca.org
Individuals or teams are welcome to register a dingy, rowboat, canoe, kayak, ocean shell or any other craft that is seaworthy. No sail or powerboats allowed. There is a $40 fee for each participant who registers by 5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 1, and a $45 fee per participant for day of registration on Aug. 8.
On the morning of Aug. 8, registration at the Landing begins at 7:30 a.m. The race starts at 8:30 a.m. It is strongly encouraged for all to register early as it makes the event run more smoothly. Refreshments are available before and after the event, and everyone is eligible for an exciting array of prizes. Packets with maps and list of rules can be picked up the day of the event at the event site.
Don’t have a kayak and all the gear? No problem thanks to Tidal Transit Kayak Rentals in Boothbay Harbor who will drop off and pick up your kayak right at Knickercane Landing for a reasonable ½ day rental rate.
Special thanks to our event sponsors, Knickerbocker Group, J Edward Night, First National Bank, and Dead River Company.
