A Damariscotta man has been arrested and charged with aggravated assault after allegedly attacking a woman on a bicycle while he was naked.

The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office alleges that David S. Gilbert, 54, was naked when he attacked a woman near Belvedere Road April 21 in Nobleboro.

Lincoln County Sheriff's Office Lt. Rand Maker said the office has reason to believe Gilbert may have been suffering from medical issues before the attack.

“Basically, what we have is he was in a vehicle on Belvedere Road with a family member when they got into an argument,” he said. “He got out of the vehicle and continued into Nobleboro.

“Allegedly, he assaulted a woman on a bicycle and fled when confronted by a Damariscotta Police Officer.”

Gilbert has been taken into custody and is being held on $5,000 cash bail at Two Bridges Regional Jail.

The woman who was attacked is fine, Maker said.

Aggravated assault is listed as a Class B crime, which carries with a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and up to a $20,000 crime.
