Please support the Legion’s capital campaign

Dear Editor:

The American Legion building in the Industrial Park was built in 1998 due to the generosity of the estate of Newbert “Brud” Pierce and continues to be supported by the estate of Virginia Gamage. The Hall as been used over the years to support all manner of events including rentals for funerals, weddings, and receptions. It has also been used to support non-profit events such as the annual Christmas Dinner, the annual Rotary Soup Bowl dinner fundraiser, and is also available for low or no cost non-profit organizations that are consistent with the mission of the American Legion, such as the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts; and for other charitable events.

As with all structures, time and use have taken its toll. A list of maintenance issues has been identified and prioritized, as well as the cost to make the necessary improvements to the facility. The Legion needs to have the financial resources to continue to support veterans and their families with emergency funding, to support our Boy and Girl Scouts, Scholarships, and to contribute to veterans’ programs such as Honor Flight and Maine Adaptive’s Veterans No Boundaries. So, in order to meet the maintenance needs for the facility, it is necessary to ask the community for help and have a Capital Campaign. Our 2019 goal is to raise $75,000.

The American Legion Post 36 is a non-profit organization and all donations to it are tax deductible. All those willing to contribute should make the donation checks out to “American Legion Charles E. Sherman Jr, Post 36,” note that it is for the Capital Campaign, and mail to P.O. Box 874, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538.

Please help us help the community! Thank you!

David Patch
