Salt Bay Summer Orchestra, an orchestra day camp for kids, is scheduled for July 29-Aug. 2 at Lincoln Academy. The registration deadline is July 15, so make your plans now.

Veteran music teachers Kaity Newell and Carol Preston are teaming up to offer this five-day educational and fun event giving experienced and beginning string players a summer boost. There are two half-day programs offered for violin, viola, cello, and string bass.

The “Getting Started Program” is an afternoon-only program for beginning string students ages 8-15. No experience is needed for this program. Students will spend most of their time in group lessons and will also learn note reading using games and fun activities. Arrangements for renting an instrument for the week can be made when registering.

The “Player's Program” is a morning-only program for experienced students ages 7-15. Students will enjoy ensemble rehearsals, fiddling sessions, and enrichment activities in music theory (music reading) and other music topics. Students in the “Player's Program” may want to stay for the afternoon and have fun learning a second string instrument.

Carol Preston is a violinist, teaches lessons at Preston Music Studio, Bay Chamber Music School, and Damariscotta Montessori School and has taught string orchestra at Lincoln Academy; Kaity Newell, also a violinist, is a fiddling expert and strings teacher at Great Salt Bay Community School, as well as music classes at the Center for Teaching and Learning.
