Ocean Point Column: Thank you activity chairs and volunteers

Tue, 07/27/2021 - 11:00am

I would like to clarify something mentioned in last week’s column that concerns the service and gathering for Pat Waldman on Saturday July 31. This is a private event by invitation only and not open to Ocean Pointers or the public.

The weather continues to be in the forefront of many conversations these days as those who are on vacation have seen very little warmth and sun. Let’s hope that pattern changes in August.

It is difficult to believe we are almost at the end of July, where did the month go? There’s so much activity here at the Point with many events and people vacationing.

Thank you to the following people for chairing an activity last week: Kathy Lindley and Maureen Driscoll, the Beach Family Picnic; Marilyn Heise for her book talk; Ann Hussey Hogaboom and her committee Cookie Dana, Holly Hornor, Donna Logan, Liz Colton, Lynn Wilson, and Diane Eakin for Attic Treasures. These individuals went above and beyond in making the sale a huge success; they began planning last summer and met on a regular basis to insure everything went efficiently. Ann would like to thank all of the individuals who set up on Thursday (no easy task) and those who volunteered their time the day of the sale and the clean up after. She would also like to thank the many who provided trucks for pick up and transporting items not sold. Thank you to Barb Yahn, Cindy Raposa and Joe Fuery, Leslie and Lanny Whitehouse, Steve Johnson, Helene Cass, Bonnie Bennett, Patty Gardner, Marcia Donald Bibbs Fowler, Chris Kipp, Paul and Sue Taylor, Bev Holt, Laurie Frazier, Richard Hogaboom, Maureen Bennett, Fred Wilson, Barb Newell, Barb Klein, Owen and Al Dawson, Jeff Slayton and Jefferson Driscoll.

What a perfect night for our Lobster Bake last Saturday evening, one of the best evenings of the summer! Thank you to Jonathan and Kate Dawson along with their children Jane, Al and Owen and helpers: Kate and Tyler Kipp, Connie Saindon, Cara Pond, Charlie Carrick, Mark Milligan, Rhea Lea, Matt and Kathy Lindley, Holly Cleary, David Butterworth, Ciara Rush, Andy Smith and Janis Scianablo.

I’m sure many of you are as excited about the Olympics as I am. I have to admit it’s difficult to choose a favorite event, as I like so many of them. I will be eager to report on the results of our own Ocean Point Olympics as our young athletes compete in several different sporting events this week.

Along with our regular weekly activities our Junior Tennis Team will travel to Christmas Cove on Wednesday July 28 for a match beginning at 10:30. We wish them all the best as this is their first match of the season with more to come.

On Aug. 2, Jonathan Dawson is planning a Kid’s Rowing competition at Grimes from 3 to 5 p.m. There will be two age groups competing, 11 and under and 15 and under. Sign up is at the Casino and the event is free. That same evening at Grimes the Rushes will host the Beach Family Picnic beginning at 6.

Begin sharpening your trivia skills, as our third annual Trivia Night is Thursday, Aug. 5 at 7 p.m. There’s always some fierce competition at this event, BYO beverage of choice, sign up is on the bulletin board at the Casino.

Our second Food Sale of the season will be held on Friday, Aug. 6 at 9:30 a.m.; Barb Slayton and Ginna Yerrall are co-chairs for this event. Food items may be dropped off at the Casino by 9 for pricing. Please stay and enjoy coffee, donuts and good conversation along with our raffle and silent auction. If this sale is anything like the July sale it is sure to be a hit!

Start your day off on a pleasant note by attending the Pancake Breakfast on Saturday morning Aug. 7 from 8:30 to 10 a.m. The Hamblett Family will be serving up some mouth-watering pancakes along with juice and coffee.

Rev.Cannon John L.C.Mitman, Minister, Episcopal Church (ret.) Lisbon Falls, Maine will conduct Sunday Services at the Wilson Memorial Chapel on Sunday, Aug. 1 at 9:30 a.m., all are welcome.

What an emotionally challenging year for Ocean Pointers as so many of our beloved residents have passed and sadly, we’ve recently lost two additional long time friends.

Barbara Newell passed away on June 19 at the very young age of 102! Barbara will be remembered for her dynamic personality, infectious smile and her energy. She certainly loved life and of course her family, many, many friends and Ocean Point.

Throughout her life Barbara was involved in many charitable and non-profit organizations. She was also very athletic; tennis, golf and boating were some of her favorites. She was a great cook and as I understand it a writer as well. I loved engaging Barbara in conversation as you always walked away smiling and laughing at something she said, she will be missed by all who knew and loved her!

Our condolences to her son Pete and wife Barb, her daughter Nancy Robbins and daughter Betsy and husband Richard Morse, her 6 grandchildren: Kimberly Jetnil, Matthew Robbins, Carrie Newell, Stephanie Kaler, Robin and Richard Morse and her seven great grandchildren.

Long time resident Kitty Anagnost passed away on July 6 at her home in New Jersey. For many Ocean Pointers Kitty is probably best known for co- writing a history of the cottages at Ocean Point titled,” An Historical Survey of Ocean Point Architecture.” She spent many hours researching this topic along with Harold Pinkham Jr, Ph.D.

Kitty was a kind, caring, loving and warm individual and a real “people person.” She thoroughly enjoyed spending quality time with her family especially at Ocean Point.

Kitty possessed a great affection for Ocean Point and participated in all that the Point offered. Kitty enjoyed walking, and on most sunny days could be seen sitting at the beach with her friends,” the beach ladies” as they were affectionately known, engaged in lively conversation. Theatre and Art were also a passion and she was a long time member of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Our deepest condolences to her husband Jim, daughter Alex and husband Jim Theriault, her son Alan and wife Linda, son Robert, grandchildren Stacy and Spencer, Grace, Jason Randlett and two great-grandchildren. Kitty’s son Bradley predeceased her.

Just a reminder to all driving around Ocean Point please adhere to the posted speed limits. Let’s keep everybody safe!

This week will be a bit quiet so enjoy and have a great week!
