Ocean Point Column: Jean Slayton, Pat Farrin and more

With just a month into winter season, dare I say it has been quite mild with just a few minor snowfalls to date. I, like so many others I’ve spoken with, would be happy if the rest of winter remained on this track. I am not opposed to snow but I do prefer it in the ski areas where it offers so much more enjoyment.

Early last week I had the opportunity to catch up with Jean Slayton who, and I’m sure you will concur, is just an enjoyable occurrence. Jean is always upbeat, cheerful, and her enthusiasm is quite contagious!

She cherished the time spent with her family during the holidays, but like most of us, is ready to look toward returning to the Point. Jean visits the Point quite often and reports everything appears to be okay. The construction of our new Casino continues to progress as the weather has cooperated thus far.

Jean was especially excited about a new venture that her niece Beth and husband Jack McKenna will be starting in the spring, the Hydro Terra Ocean Education Center. I understand that there will be more information regarding the McKenna’s business in the weeks to come.

Jean also had a surprise visit from Carrie and Peter Crosby during the holidays. The Crosbys are from Meredith, New Hampshire and have rented the Slayton cottage for a period of time for many summers; they return occasionally to the region in the off-season.

Linda and Suzette Gill were late in arriving to the Point this past summer however; we had the opportunity to speak with them just before the Columbus Day close up. At that time their plan was to remain until Thanksgiving but fortunately for them they have been able to stay longer and are still in residence.

Who would have thought that our beautiful Wilson Memorial Chapel would be the site of a baptism in the cold and snow in December? Peter Panagore performed the ceremony outside on the steps of the chapel on Dec. 30. Family members including great aunt Jill Carrick witnessed the baptism of 5-month-old Meredith Jones, daughter of Cheryl and Alex Jones. Such a special moment for all and congratulations.

I loved reading the column written by Joe Gelarden in the Register regarding Ocean Point’s great friend, Pat Farrin, and his courageous battle with cancer over the last several years. Joe’s column truly captured the essence of Pat’s character. Pat is an incredible human being and despite his many adversities always remains strong, steadfast and loyal in his commitment to helping others. We are fortunate that he is such a presence in our community.

Congratulations to Meagan Hamblett who has just been named executive director for the YMCA Alliances of Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. Meagan will be leaving her position as director of CLC YMCA in Damariscotta Jan. 31. We wish you all the best in your new and exciting career opportunity.

    Have a great week!
