Ocean Point Column: Construction, condolences and more

Tue, 09/24/2019 - 11:30am

Fall has officially arrived, as indicated by the calendar, yet to the delight of most here at the Point, summer weather continues; I hope it will remain balmy for a while.

The construction of our new casino is in full swing and gathers quite a few onlookers each day. Many witnessed the Gardiner’s 1877 house come down this past week as well — lots of activity going on for those not fortunate enough to be present.

Sadly, Ocean Point has lost another dear friend. Brooks Clark passed away on Sept. 7 after a brief illness. Brooks was the son of the late Stan and Charlon Clark and although I personally did not know Brooks well, I had the good fortune of following his stellar teaching/coaching career through his dad. Stan always shared a story regarding Brooks’ coaching, especially at Bonny Eagle High School where he led them to several state titles.

In reading his obituary I realized how lucky his students were to have Brooks as their teacher as he truly knew how to engage students in learning, a very special talent! All of Ocean Point offers sincere condolences to his wife Tina and their son/nephew Andrew as well as his sister Catie Salmon on the loss of their husband, dad, brother and uncle.

Ocean Pointer Tony Krason is once again sharing his time and talent for the Maine Special Olympics in co-chairing the Boothbay Charities Classic Sept. 27 and 28. A lobster bake and silent auction will be held Friday at the Railway Village beginning at 4 p.m. Come out and support the Maine Special Olympics by attending the bake and auction which is open to the public. Tickets are $50 for the bake and can be purchased in advance; contact Brenda and Leon Blackman.

It promises to be a great event with many former professional athletes participating.

The Ocean Point Inn is hosting a turkey dinner with all the fixings on Sunday, Oct. 13 from 5 to 9 p.m. Last year’s dinner was well attended by many Ocean Pointers and was a great way to celebrate the end of our season and say our good-byes to Ocean Point friends. You can make reservations by calling the Inn; the price of the dinner is $30.

A reminder to all that the seasonal water turn off is Thursday Oct. 17.

    Have a great week!
