Ocean Point Column: Closing up, dearly departed and more

Tue, 10/22/2019 - 11:30am

If you closed your cottage for the season over the holiday weekend you fortunately missed a major nor’easter that occurred last Thursday. I understand the high winds brought down electric wires and trees, which resulted in many blocked roadways that resulted in no power to the area and to Ocean Point. I have been following the updates on the CMP website and there are still a few area residents without power; some residents experienced damage to their property as well. I’m unsure of the status of the seasonal water as it was scheduled for turn off Thursday morning beginning at 7 a. m.

Ocean Pointers were busy preparing for the end of the season, which turned out to be quite hectic with all of the area activities: the Pumpkinfest in Damariscotta, the annual Craft Fair at the Railway Museum, squeezing in one last boat ride and enjoying one last meal at your favorite establishment. Will and I were fortunate enough to catch the last lunch at Fiona’s Harborside on Sunday. Many took time to enjoy a turkey dinner at the Inn with friends Sunday evening and sadly saying their goodbyes until next season.

Unfortunately, just before the holiday weekend I was informed of the loss of two dear Ocean Pointers. Mary Jane O’Connor passed on Oct. 7 at the young age of 96. Mary Jane was the last of the Burleigh girls originally from Augusta and who currently own the Band Box. I understand that Mary Jane was one of four girls and their father Donald proclaimed them all queens, Mary Jane was the Queen of Hearts and was known to be quite the spitfire. Mary Jane loved Ocean Point and gathered all of her family there last summer to celebrate her 95th birthday; our sincerest condolences to Mary Jane’s five children, eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and extended family.

Sigitas Zulus, husband of Vida Zulus passed peacefully on Oct. 7 with his family by his side. Sigitas and Vida have spent many summers enjoying Ocean Point and all of the outdoor activities, our heartfelt condolences to Sigitas’ wife Vida and their children.

One of my favorite sites this time of year is driving through the village of East Boothbay and seeing the Pumpkin People. The residents of the village do such a fabulous job of creating these fun and whimsical people.

If you had the opportunity to attend the Pumpkinfest then you may have seen Ocean Point resident Mari McGuire’s giant pumpkin Slick the Snail leading the event. Mari also created Mr. and Mrs. Pumpkinhead that sits at Hancock Lumber.

Our casino project is moving along quickly. Over the holiday weekend the surface of the sports court was put down, as was the fencing around the court. I understand the foundation for the building will be poured soon.

Please stay in touch with your news this winter; stay healthy and have a great week!
