Ocean Point Column: Cheers to local businesses
This past week has seen a decline in activity here at the Point. Many of our residents have returned home to begin a new school year and we certainly wish all of our school age students a very successful year.
I do anticipate many returning to enjoy the last days of summer playing those last few rounds of tennis or pickleball, boating, swimming, walking or just taking in the spectacular sunsets that we are fortunate enough to witness all summer long.
It truly was an incredible summer of beautiful weather and according to the weatherman, it’s reported to be the second hottest on record.
Congratulations to many of our local businesses, and there were many, who were recognized recently in the September issue of Down East Magazine’s The Best of Maine. They included: The Five Gables Inn, Crow Point Yoga, Boothbay Harbor Country Club, Shore Hills Campground, the Carousel Marina and the Boothbay Harbor Marina.
Windjammer Days was a finalist in the Festival Category and our own Boothbay Register was a finalist in the Newspaper category. Also finalists were The Harbor Theater, Gleason Art Gallery, East Boothbay General Store, Southport General Store, House of Logan, Sherman’s Bookstore and Pier 1 Pizza.
Footbridge Brewery and BBQ was a finalist in both BBQ and Brewery categories and Pinkham’s was a finalist in the Seafood. Recognized as a finalist in the Burger category was Dunton’s Doghouse.
Grover’s Hardware and two of our local builders were also winners, Knickerbocker and Marden Builders.
Eben Blaney of Edgecomb was a finalist in the Furniture Maker category.
How fortunate for us to have all of these incredible businesses in our area! Please continue to support them.
Congratulations to Leah Brownell and Austin Urban who will exchange vows next weekend in their home town of East Haddam, Connecticut. Leah is the daughter of Crary and Ginger Brownell and granddaughter of Sonny and Helen Brownell, long-time Ocean Pointers.
Weather permitting, the tennis and pickleball courts will remain open for play.
Just a reminder that the Gardners are hosting the last porch party of the season at their home on Saturday, Sept. 12 at 5 p.m. Bring your beverage and an appetizer to share. This is a fundraiser for the BHCC so please come and bid on some beautiful items made by some of our very talented Ocean Pointers. The rain date will be Sunday the 13th.
If you are heading out of town for the season please consider donating your unused food items to the Food Pantry or the Community Fridge.
Have an enjoyable holiday weekend and travel safe!
