Ocean Point Column: Activities changed

Tue, 05/19/2020 - 10:30am

The “unofficial “beginning of the summer season has arrived and as I write this week’s column I can’t help but wonder what summer will look like, not only here but everywhere!

Sadly, most summer events throughout the Boothbay region and the state of Maine have either been cancelled or postponed. This holds true of some of our planned activities here at Ocean Point as well. Regrettably, it was announced last month that our 5k OP Road Race has been postponed until the summer of 2021, however, Stephanie and Kelly assure us that it will be even bigger and better next year and knowing those ladies I have no doubt.

Our gorgeous new facility is coming to completion very soon and unfortunately our grand-opening event which was to take place 4th of July weekend is postponed to a later date in the season.

The Activities Committee worked diligently last fall and winter to create a great events calendar and as you can imagine it will have to be revised to meet the guidelines set by the State so some events may take place and others may take some creative measures in order to occur. Our AD Andy Smith has some ideas on how to hold some of the kid’s activities while safely distancing.

The Wilson Chapel Board members have voted to postpone Sunday services at the Chapel until Aug. 2; the chapel will not be open each day as it has in past summers.

I was excited to learn that the Inn will be opening for dining at the end of June! Tony, Mark and their crew are busy sprucing up the property in preparation of another season. Rumor has it that not only will they be offering a take out alternative for those not quite comfortable with inside dining but also serving lunch at the pool.

Please help support not only the Ocean Point Inn but also all of our local businesses whenever possible this summer!

Stay strong and positive in these challenging times and remember our military men and women who died in service to our great country on Memorial Day. Have a great holiday weekend!
