Mt. Abram 'walks' to victory over Boothbay baseball
The old baseball aphorism stating that "base on balls will always come back to haunt you" was apparent May 20 in the Boothbay Seahawks' game versus Mt. Abram. Boothbay outhit the Roadrunners, 6-5, but 14 walks issued by Seahawk pitchers doomed them in a 17-5 defeat at Sherman Field.
In five innings, Boothbay pitchers allowed 10 earned runs, with 14 walks and recorded six strikeouts. The score could've been worse because Mt. Abram left eight men on base. Boothbay pitchers were Les White, Aiden Locke, Blake Durgan and Matt Reed.
For Boothbay, two hitters struck home runs. Casey Phelps and Locke hit "round-trippers." White singled, doubled and scored twice. Locke had two runs batted in. Reed and Dylan Chryplewicz each singled and had one RBI. Boothbay batters walked three times and struck out eight times. The Seahawks made seven errors and Roadrunners had three.
Boothbay is now 1-8, and in ninth place in the Class D South baseball standings. Temple leapfrogged past Boothbay into eighth by earning its first win, 3-0, over Forest Hills (6-3) in the second game of a May 21 doubleheader. Mt. Abram improved to 5-6.
Boothbay has a home-and-home series with Lisbon on May 22 and May 23. On Friday, the Seahawks travel to Lisbon. On Saturday, the Greyhounds come to Boothbay. Lisbon is (6-3) and in sixth place in Class C South.
