Lions Club

Sat, 05/15/2021 - 5:00pm

The Boothbay Region Lions Club met for a regular meeting on May 12.  Our guest speaker was 2nd Vice District Governor Sally Iverson.  She and her husband Neil drove down from Eustis.  They are members of the Stratton/Eustis Lions Club.  We all enjoyed shepherd’s pie provided by Lion Jay and a strawberry dessert provided by Lion Karen.  DELICIOUS!

Second VDG Sally’s talk was informative and encouraging as our club has been struggling as so many have in the past year.  She brought this year’s state pin engraved with the Lions International theme of United in Kindness and Diversity for those of us interested in purchasing.

Lions International supports two organizations providing service dogs for those in need.  One, Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation provides dogs to the blind, and a second, Canine Companions for Independence provides dogs for people with disabilities, including adults, children, veterans, and professionals.  All money donated by various clubs is divided between these two organizations.  All the money donated to “Dimes for Dogs” at each of our meetings is used in this way.

Lion Sally focused on leadership, recruiting new officers, and bringing new energy to Lions Clubs.  She noted that Lions should be having fun as they meet and serve their communities and should try to remain as visible as possible.

Lions Sally and Neil both talked about things their Club has done over the years to encourage membership and some of the projects their club has been involved in.  We mentioned some of the things our Club would like to do, but COVID-19 restrictions have severely hindered us.  We also mentioned to Lions Sally and Neil some of the projects our club has been involved in in the past (pre-COVID-19) and the fact that we have money and have given generously to the community.

During our business meeting, we discussed some projects that might be feasible as COVID-19 restrictions are relaxed in the near future.

Ticket sales for our Cabbage Island trip on June 27 are on sale now.  You may purchase a ticket from Barbara Wallace (633-6205) or any Lions member.

Lion Duane took over for Lion Mark as Tail Twister and fined himself for wearing shorts.  He also fined our guest 2nd VDG Sally for not shutting off her cell phone, as it rang during the meeting.  Lion Jay fined himself for not making the announcement at the beginning of the meeting to make sure all cell phones were turned off or silenced.  Lion Wendy was a tattle-tale and fined her husband Lion Paul for wearing his badge home after the last meeting.

Our next meeting will be May 26 at 6:15 p.m. at the club house.  Lion Jay will provide dinner, and Lion Duane will bring dessert.  Guests interested in joining our club are always welcome.  For more information, visit us on Facebook.
