Library nets $1,205 from chess fundraiser
A local chess fundraiser in August raised $1,205 for the Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library. On Aug. 27, Executive Director Joanna Breen accepted an oversized check from Raza Patel, an 11-year-old chess prodigy from New York City, who spends summers with his family in Boothbay Harbor.
On Aug. 21, Patel held a chess lesson on the library's lawn where he discussed chess tactics and mentored players of all levels. Patel's non-profit is called "Moves for a Mission," which he founded last year. He previously held two MFAM fundraisers in New York City. MFAM officials report over $8,000 has been raised from the three events.
Patel hopes to hold another MFAM fundraiser for the BHML next August. Breen reported this year's proceeds went to the library's Children's Room's programs.
