Where would we all be without good stories… Stories teach, influence, and inspire. They build connections between people and their relationships. They make us fall in love. And not just romantic love, but also the love between family, friends, and community. It’s a wonderful feeling to be swept away into a story, and Lincoln County Community Theater (LCCT) is gearing up to tell you a great one! LCCT, the theater company in residence at Damariscotta’s historic Lincoln Theater, will present the Maine premiere of “Bright Star,” over one weekend with four performances, opening Friday, May 13 and running through Sunday, May 15. “Bright Star” is an American musical from one of the most acclaimed and beloved talents in entertainment, Steve Martin, and chart-topping singer-songwriter, Edie Brickell.

We all have a story to tell… and “Bright Star,” filled with unforgettable complex characters, checks all the boxes. Love. Friendship. Conflict. Suffering and sacrifice. Billy Cane (Cade Parker) is a young soldier just home from World War II. He is a naïve, young, aspiring writer headed to the city in search of his dreams. Alice Murphy (Christina Belknap), the brilliant editor of The Asheville Southern Journal, who was a spitfire in her youth, now finds herself closed off and haunted by her past. Jimmy Ray (Joe Lugosch), Alice’s first love and the charming, intelligent son of Mayor Josiah Dobbs (John David Adams), is not afraid to stand up for what he believes in even when it questions community expectations and the life that is laid out before him. Margo Crawford (Honora Boothby), the small-town bookstore owner who is smart as a whip finds herself desperately, and secretly, in love with her best friend. Together, with the support of Daddy Cane (Andrew Fenniman), Mama and Daddy Murphy (Nina Tilander and Andy Barber), the Asheville Southern Journal editors Daryl Ames (Derek Kingsley) and Lucy Grant (Mallory Adams), and an incredible supporting ensemble, the cast of “Bright Star” are swept into a powerful journey that unfolds in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina between 1923 and 1945, facing trouble and happiness that will forever alter their lives.

Featuring 20 incredible musical numbers, from blue grass square dances to heartfelt ballads, “Bright Star” is propelled by an ensemble of onstage musicians under the direction of John Mulcahy, and dancers choreographed by Emily Mirabile. A Grammy-nominee for original cast recording, “Bright Star” charted on five different Billboard lists in its first week of wide release, won the Outer Critics Circle Awards for Best Musical and Best Score, and won the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Music. And as if that wasn’t enough, it also received five Tony Award nominations including Best Musical, Best Score, Best Book, Best Lead Actress in a Musical and Best Orchestrations. The beautiful melodies support the rich tapestry of deep emotion and enthralling performances that tell this breathtaking story of enduring love, family ties, and the light of forgiveness that shines from a bright star.
