Lady Seahawks fall to Oceanside in tennis

Boothbay Region High School’s girls tennis team won both singles matches versus Oceanside April 16, but it wasn’t enough to claim the first team victory of the season.

No. 1 singles player Hannah Roberts survived a tight contest versus Emma Carpenter 6-7, 6-3, 10-7 and No. 2 Isabel Harkins beat Alexa Barstow, 6-3, 6-1. But a limited roster provided for a small margin of error for Boothbay. The Lady Seahawks needed to win No. 1 doubles due to forfeiting third singles and second doubles. No. 1 doubles team Kylie Brown and Della Hahn, in their varsity debut, lost in straight sets to Alydra Hatch and Alyssa Griffin, 5-7, 3-6.

Boothbay coach Alex Arsenault reported Harkins started out rusty. “She quickly shook that off, and controlled play for most of the match,” he wrote. Roberts’ match was a long, tense contest. High school tennis matches are best of three sets, but due to darkness, Roberts and Carpenter played a third set tiebreaker. Roberts’ victory was her first as a Seahawk.

Boothbay is 0-1. Oceanside is 1-0.  Boothbay’s next match is Friday, April 23 at 11 a.m. versus Medomak Valley in Boothbay Harbor.
