Kwiltz 4 Kidz, is a group of nine quilters in Boothbay whose mission is to create comfort quilts for children and adults who are going through a crisis situation such as chemo, serious illness, loss of a loved one, house fire, and other challenges. We also support local nursing home residents with seasonal gifts and quilts for the veteran residents. Other organizations we support are New Hope for Women, Healthy Kids and Wrap-A-Smile.
The group was established by Karen Keyes, who was taught to quilt by her mother — a master quilte — and Sue Burge back in 2008. The group switched from hand-piecing and quilting to machine sewing in 2011 in order to increase the number of quilts made to meet the growing need. Kwiltz 4 Kidz gave away 100 quilts in 2019 and have given away over 500 quilts since they began meeting weekly to sew together.
The quilts are given at no cost to the recipient. The cost of fabric, batting and thread has been primarily funded by the quilters and fund-raising through the sale of some pieces at local fairs. Anticipating the cancellation of most fairs in 2020, the group is hosting a special one-day sale to support our mission on Saturday, July 25 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 922 Wiscasset Road, Boothbay, across from the Sea Glass Spa, rain or shine. The items include small and large quilts, wall-hangings, table runners and other hand-made seasonal items, all discounted 30 to 40%. This is a one-time opportunity to acquire our Maine-made quilts at a special price and at the same time support children and adults in our community. Cash or local checks only.
