Juniper and McKown Points Column: Visitors, weddings, the Bake and more
I guess last week’s skimpy column elicited some sympathy; quickly several newsy emails came in.
This from Betty Repa: “We (Ted and Betty, aka Granddad and Nanaby) are excited with upcoming visits from family! For the week of the Fourth, we will have our younger son Ted, his wife Michelle, and one granddaughter who is home just having finished her freshman year at University of Southern California. As Stanford grads, with SC our biggest rival, we are sort of holding our noses ( not really) as we find ourselves now rooting for USC! During the week we will be enjoying the lobster bake, a sail on my brother Bill’s beautiful sailboat, the Sea Owl, and lots of swimming with cousins nearby!”
Cammie Beattie wrote: “The Beatties open their season of revolving guests on June 29th with the arrival of Charlie, Heather, CJ and 2 dogs, followed closely by friends from Tennessee. Look out McKown Point!”
Elaine Jones brought to my attention her newest project: a summer-long, 7 stop scavenger hunt to help fund outdoor education programs for local schoolchildren, notably the popular overnight camps on Burnt Island. Wannabe pirates can sign up on the website www.lighthouseeducation.org and for a small donation start the quest for treasure.
Always remember, Mother Nature bats last. The one sunny Saturday over a week ago was indeed an aberration. This past Saturday saw a doozy of a downpour. Despite the rain and fall-like temperatures, 140 guests donned parkas, slickers and clear trash bags to celebrate the marriage of Lee Corbin’s grandson Daniel Scowcroft to Andrea (Andie) Perez on the family’s seaside lawn, followed by a reception under a magnificent tent. The joy outshone the rain and proved that love does indeed conquer all (even the elements). Congratulations!
Once again the quartet of Patrick Wilkinson, Aaron Bloom, Will Barton and Carl Dooley will convene on the Point this week. With the Boat House in new hands, the Studio occupied, and with the passage of time, hangs-outs will probably be limited to front porches and N/A beers.
The highlight this week is the Lobster Bake on Saturday. If you don’t have tickets by now I don’t know what to tell you. Try the JPVIS website or throw yourself at the mercy of Co-Chairs Jean Dilley and Cindy Gagne. Promise them you’ll husk corn for the next 5 years. Because of set up times there will be no yoga at the Community House this Saturday morning.
Hats off to Sarah Barton and Dave Taylor who put out a timely, concise, and accurate schedule of each week’s events and tennis updates. This column will avoid trying to repeat what they do so well and will concentrate on fiction (historical and otherwise). Happy 4th everyone!
